PART II - Adolescence
Section 1 - Schooling
1. Where did you go to elementary school? Who were your teachers?
North Park Elementary School in Tremonton
Kindergarten - Mr. Manning
1st - Mrs. Hansen
2ND - Mrs. Brower
3rd - Mrs. Stevenson
4Th - Mrs. Palmer
5Th - Mrs. Dredge (in Malad)
2. What was your school like? How did you get to school?
The elementary was one level. In 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade the school seemed huge with all the different hallways for the different grades, a lunch room/auditorium and library, but by the time I reached 5Th grade and had experienced a year in each hallway it didn't seem as big.
We rode the bus to and from school. Occasionally when I didn't want to ride the bus, I would purposefully miss it and walk with my friend, Aubrey or Kimberly, to her house and have my Mom pick me up there.
3. What memories do you have from elementary school?
I loved my kindergarten teacher! He always made us laugh! I remember crying the very first day of school. I remember doing lots of coloring. I think this is the year I got chicken pox.
In first grade I remember Mrs. Hansen reading to us. She would instruct us to sit in a semi circle around her and she would read. I enjoyed this. I vaguely remember having a hard time saying her name or something like that. I remember thinking she didn't really like me. I noticed that the only time she seemed to smile was at parent teacher conferences and I developed a dislike for this and what I felt at the time was her insincerity.
Second grade - Mrs. Brower - the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Singer. I remember she let us make things out of clay and then she would "bake" them to be porcelain objects. I liked to make things like bowls and animals. My favorites were an orange bowl and a little penguin, which I gave to my Mom and Grandma, respectively. I remember this year, my friend Sara's house burnt down and as a class we collected a little money to give to her family to help them out. I remember having to read a lot this year and our parents had to sign a paper stating how long we read for.
Third grade - Mrs. Stevenson - Spelling Bee's galore and Accelerated Reader. Old enough to be a Hall Monitor! The Hall Monitors wore a green or orange fluorescent vest and had a clip board they carried around with them. If there were other kids in the hall breaking the rules, the hall monitor would write their name down and turn it into their teacher who would in turn punish the rule breaker accordingly. Hall Monitors were on duty for a week and were assigned by the teachers.
4Th grade - Mrs. Palmer - She got married and pregnant this year and we had the dumbest substitute. She had us set up little businesses and throughout the week we could earn "money" to buy stuff from each other on Friday. We could earn the money by getting perfect scores on papers, helping others around the classroom, etc. We could sell whatever we wanted. Most people sold baked cookies and brownies from home, but Mom ordered for me mechanical pencils from oriental trading magazine and I made lots of money because everyone wanted a pencil. At the end of the year we had an auction where all the students brought in one thing and the teacher brought in a few things too. We also had a creative writing hour. Sometimes she would give us a prompt but usually we could spend the hour writing whatever we wanted. I loved this hour! Also, she would read to us. We usually had a copy of the book and could follow along. We also did flashcards for times tables this year.
5Th grade - had we stayed in tremonton I would have had Mrs. Brower again, but this is when we moved up to Malad. I had Mrs. Dredge. Her name says it all.
4. What did you do at recess? What games did you play?
Four Square or Tether Ball.
5. Did you ever skip school?
Not until I was a senior in high school - even then the days I skipped weren't a big deal. It was for things like college day, or it was around prom, etc.
6. What subjects or programs do you remember?
??? the basics. Math, science, reading, accelerated reader - which was a program where books were assigned so many points after reading the book you took the AR test on the computer and received so many points for correct answers. After a certain amount of time you could use your AR points to buy something from the AR store. In high school they started the Renaissance program to reward good grades.
7. Where did you attend Jr. high school and high school?
Malad Middle School and Malad High School are in Malad. When I was in 5Th grade they had just started building a new middle school. Prior to this time 6th grade was in the elementary school and 7th-12th were in the high school. However, the middle school was not completed in time for my 6th grade year so for the first 1/3 of the year we had our classes spread out between the old high school and the elementary school. The middle school (high school) teachers would have to come from the high school to teach us. It was an interesting year.
8. Who were your favorite teachers? Why?
In Middle School: Mr. Ray (science) - He was just so funny! He always kept the class laughing. His philosophy was if he could make us laugh and enjoy the time we spent learning science we would learn to enjoy science.
In high school: Ms. Brimhall - (Track coach and AP English teacher) She was my track coach for 6 years. My senior year she was my English teacher. We did British lit. This is where I feel I really learned to write and to love literature.
Mrs. Alder - Jr. Miss hostess - She taught me many valuable things, esp. how to interview.
Mrs. Brigham - Basically just the best math teacher ever.
9. Who were your friends in Jr. high and high school. Did you have a special hang out?
Jr. high - Ashley Tripp and Brittney Bischoff
High School - Alexis Plowman, Jerianne Corbridge, Kaleena Showell, Jeanny Corbridge - these were my closest friends. No special hang out - we would go to Jer's quite often.
10. How do you fellow classmates remember you?
In my opinion this is a dumb question! I don't know. Ask them.
11. What school activities did you participate in?
Volleyball, Track, Drill Team, Student Government, National Honor Society, BPA (Business Professionals of America), SADD club (Students Against Destructive Decisions), Knowledge bowl, Renaissance, Spanish Club, Jr. Prom Chairman.
12. Did you go to school dances?
Some. They were usually set up as group dates before the dance and then we'd go all together to the dance and hang out all together at the dance, which was fine. I didn't particularly enjoy the dances. I'd usually just stand there awkwardly, wishing people knew some other style of dance besides hip hop. Whatever happened to Swing, Waltz, Rumba, Polka, Fox Trot, Tango, etc?!
13. Awards or Recognition in high school?
uhh...yeah but i can't remember what they are.
